Well I'm not much of a teacher, but I'll try to think of some tips.
First of all, define what POV you're using and what tense you're using. Because it's a backstory I'm guessing you're using past tense, for this make sure you never accidentally switch to present tense [I do this on accident sometimes]
If this does happen, after you're done with a chapter/section always read through it and make edits. Sometimes typos can slip through the cracks and it ends up in embarrassment [for example, if you write 'shock' and it typos to 'sock', it won't tell you it's a typo and you might miss it]. And of course while you're rereading and making edits keep a look out for changes in tenses.
